How to use our flooring calculator

This flooring calculator works out how much wood flooring you need for any project. Measure each room's length and width in metres and enter them above — for L-shaped rooms, bays and hallways, split the space into simple rectangles and add each one as a separate room. The calculator totals the floor area, adds your chosen wastage allowance and, if you enter a price per square metre and pack coverage, estimates the number of packs and total cost.

Choosing the right wastage allowance

Every wood flooring installation produces off-cuts. Straight plank layouts are the most efficient and typically need only 5% extra. For most projects we recommend 10%, and for herringbone, chevron and diagonal layouts allow 15%, because the angled cuts at walls and borders generate more waste. Always round up to the next full pack and keep a spare board or two for future repairs.
